This forum is great, it provides dofollow links but my niche is digital photography but I can't not find such category in this forum.

I wouldn't say that you're wasting your time—just remember that Google takes a particular attention to relevance when it comes to links, among other elements used to qualify a site for searched topics.

So I would probably pass by and look for a better—that is, more relevant—place.
