SLR Quality picture on Digital Camera? What factor affects?
What should I be looking for, when looking to buy a digital camera (digital SLR or compact)? Pixels only matter if we want to produce the picture in large so this seems irrelevant.
Any suggestion would be great. Thanks.

The modern version of equipment for these shots would be a Canon 7D with a 70-200 f2.8 IS L lens. Though he's got lucky with lesser equipment! Remember he may have taken 1000 shots to get these few good ones. With what he's using this chap is most likely an amateur.
The 7D is better than the 20D he used because it has AL servo tracking to focus during flight.
Photographers that shoot birds do not usually use the average kit that you would as an amateur - it's very expensive to shoot birds as the telephoto lenses required can be up to £5000 each.
The info Knight has given you about print sizes etc is wrong.
