i love the canon's design over sony's [and the features; i have owned the original powershot], but the sony has more & better reviews on bestbuy and also better video.
i want whatever i choose to take good action shots & be more advanced than a standard point & shoot;
i love photography but cant afford an SLR or anything more expensive than the above [so please dont suggest anything else]

There are a lot of online review sites. dpreview.com, epinions.com, cnet.com, zdnet.com, etc.
Some reviews are fake, they're posted by the manufacturer to boost sales; or they're posted by a competitor to damage sales.
Something that's very important to you may be of no importance to me; so a few answers here are not enough to make an informed decision. Spend about 2 hours reading online reviews of both cameras and you should find yourself easily preferring one over the other.
In my opinion, an experienced camera maker (Canon) is going to produce a better digital camera than an electronics company (Sony)... but the last Canon I had (an SX10-IS) sucked so I'm not confident in the Canon or Sony brands. I've been buying digital cameras about once per year since they first came out around 1997 and have found Olympus and Fuji to be the best manufacturers.
