Some tips for doing my own senior portraits?

I'm doing my own senior portraits this year, to save a lot of money. I have a digital SLR and a few prime lenses ideal for portraits. I may end of doing some of my friends' pictures as well; I have a flickr account, and some of my classmates have complimented me on my photography, especially praising what few portraiture shots I took.

Do most general rules-of-thumb for portraiture carry over when shooting a set of senior pictures? Is it good to include props? And what about backgrounds and backdrops?

If you have any tips or suggestions for how to take a great senior picture, in much of the same way that professional photographers do, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Props are optional, but one point of senior pictures is to show your personality. So, if you love playing guitar, you may want a shot of you holding your guitar, for example. Most senior pictures I've seen were done outside, in a field or forest area - state parks are good places to go. (Unless you really hate the outdoors - then having your photos done outside would be kind of dumb.) You may want to have a few shots with a plain backdrop, as well.

I think the best way I can help you is to tell you to just search "senior picture" on Flickr and check out what you get. There are tons of senior pictures on the site... find some you especially like, and imitate them (but don't forget to put on some personal twist - senior pictures are supposed to show your personality, after all).

Also, I suggest having a friend with you just to make sure you're in the frame just right. Self portraits can be difficult when it comes to framing & composition...
