What are some good websites, discussion forums, or books for a novice photographer?

I'm interested in learning more about photography. I'm about to purchase a new digital camera (probably the Canon Powershot S3) and I want to take better pictures (especially portraits).

I know that a class would be beneficial; but I've already got too many commitments right now. So... in the mean time, where is a good spot for me to learn? Where is a good discussion forum for newbies to ask basic, newbie questions or post beginner photos for critiques?

Thank you so much!!

Here is a large directory of free learning resources, tutorials, etc.
