What equipment would you recommend for someone starting out in photography?
I have the loan of a decent camera for now until I can afford an SLR.
Just wondered in terms of lenses, filters, tripod, any other accessories what experienced photographers couldn't live without and wish they had invested in sooner. Most of my photography is historic buildings and urband exploration photography.
Any advice gratefully received ![]()
I mean a DSLR
And I haven't really got a budget in mind, this investment would be over the next few months as I get more involved in photography.
And I'm in the UK
I started out with a Canon Rebel Xsi, the current equivalent would probably be the T1i. I only had the 18-55mm stock lens for the first two years, and later I purchased a 75-300mm telephoto lens. Many places sell the camera body and the two lenses I mentioned as a combo.
I also purchased a relatively good but inexpensive tripod early on, and it has done me just fine. Definitly look for both vertical and horizontal levels when purchasing a tripod. If you are looking for a really great quality tripod, you'll want to look at the brand Manfrotto.
If you find you use flash a lot you'll want to buy an external flash so that it draws from it's own battery power rather than that of your camera. I bought the bottom of the line Canon brand flash, and it has worked just fine for me. Keep in mind that little bells and whistles like a bounce card can easily be created by using an elastic band and a business card, or any blank wall or ceiling.
You'll also want to get yourself a comfortable and easy to access camera bag. Some are like backpacks, others are like large across the body purses, and of course there's the "sling bag" that's all the rage right now. You need to figure out what works best for you.
I would also recommend buying a spare battery, and some spare memory cards so you're always prepared.
Good luck!
