What kind of money can be made in video business (making them not renting them), what do you get paid for wed?
pay for weddings? pay for videotaping real estate for sale? pay for other ??? types of video taping, also what equipment (exactly) will you need for this business (camera? computer editing? other? and approx. cost of this equipment, and how do you get business.
Well, I don't have a ton of experience since I'm only in high school, but I'm recently started a video production/photography business with my friend, so here's my two cents. A lot of people I know charge by packages, for example if they are shooting a wedding, they'll have bronze, silver, and gold packages, with prices around $1000, $1500, and $2000. The bronze package might include 1 camera and the ceremony, silver 2 cameras, ceremony and reception, etc. I'm not ready for weddings yet, so I'm considering charging per DVD for events and stuff, but of course that'll probably change since we're just starting out. The standard equipment now is HD, but to edit HD you'll also need a fast computer as well, preferably dual-core above 2 ghz. HDV is pretty good, but if you have the money, the $6000 HVX200 is the best choice as it is the cheapest camera that shoots in DVCPRO HD. As for software, Avid, Final Cut Pro, and Premiere Pro are all industry standard programs. I use Premiere Pro 2.0, which isn't the most "professional" program you can get, but has great integration with After Effects and other Adobe programs. I have a canon GL2, which isn't an HD camera, but was the best SD cam I could afford (I got it for $1,500 on eBay). To some people, it might not make sense to get an SD cam, but I got it mainly for the manual functions and also because of the fact that once I upgrade my camera, I can get a better HD cam for a cheaper price than I can now. Also, even though some newer HDV cameras such as the canon HV20 offer 24p recording, the ones in the $1500 range are still consumer level. However, I would still suggest getting an HDV camera if you are starting out, as that's where the future is; but it's okay if you get a used SD cam as well. Basically, just don't go out and get brand new SD equipment. Adobe Production Studio, which is what I have, costs around $1,600 for the Pro version, and that added together with a new camera will probably cost at least $2,600. Also, consider getting at least a 500GB hard drive as you will probably want to work in uncompressed to retain quality. Right now, I don't have a whole lot of business, but were mainly trying to get our name out through word-of-mouth and we also printed a set of business cards to pass out to people. I've taped a friend's part and a school concert so far, and hopefully more business will come soon. Well, there's my two cents. I hope this helped somewhat.
