what SLR camera should i buy?
i am a makeup artist and i am always having to pay photographers to photograph my work for my portfolio. i want to take some photography classes and be able to photograph my own work but i have no idea what DSLR to get. i want a professional camera while also getting more "bang for my buck". i am a big fan of canons but am also thinking of nikon. so here's my question, photographers : what camera do you recomend and why? and do i need a better lens than the ones they come with? thanks!!!!
Well I'm going to guess you want a DSLR, not a professional camera. Dropping a couple grand on a camera that, by your own admission, you don't know how to use seems a bit much. Canons are good cameras. They aren't Nikons and if you are looking at doing primarily portrait, Nikon would be a better choice in my opinion. Canons have their place, portraits is not it.
With the Nikon, if you have enough lighting, the kit lens will take pretty decent pictures for what you want to do. Canon's kit lens is slightly more sophisticated than the body cap that covers the hole in the camera when there isn't a lens on it. You'd likely have to get something else. If you do the intricate painting stuff and you want some real closeups of it, you may have to get a different lens regardless.
When you get a camera, you're not just getting a camera. You're buying into a whole system whatever way you decide to go. You're going to get a good camera either way you go. I'd invest in a good flashgun though and a softbox or some kind of diffuser. Direct flash flattens faces out as you well know. Good Luck.
