I have a new passion for photography, I have taken a few courses for technique, but now I'm on my own.?

I recently bought a mini strobe, but the sync cord doesn't work. Someone suggested to buy a flash trigger or a pocket wizard. I'm not trying to spend 1000. What can use with my camera that will trigger one or multiple strobe without cables?

a hot shoe is the thing on top of your camera you can slide a flash onto, or in your case you can put an IR sender on it to fire your "stobe"
