What kind of camera to get for someone interested in pet photography?
My daughter has decided she wants to be a pet photographer. She has been using my old 35mm for years, having fun, but now she wants to get serious about it. She bought a book on animal photography, but the camera it suggested costs a thousand dollars! Since she hasn't used anything but automatic and phone cameras, it seems to me she's still a beginner. And anyway, we can't afford that. Can anyone recommend a lower-priced camera and lens set for her to learn with? I know she's got to have a portfolio to get into an art college, but $1,000? Plus there's lighting and backdrops... yeesh. Please help me help her with her career choice! Thanks!
Photography is roughly 70% photographer skill/experience, 20% lens quality, and 10% camera.
Even buying a lower end (or even used) digital camera, several lenses, case and accessories will put you close to (if not over) $1000. I would suggest a Canon Rebel with a kit lens to begin with. By the time she learns the camera, she will have a better idea of lenses she will want to get.
As far as a portfolio goes, it should only contain the best of her work (whatever that may be). Have her join a local camera club, and they would be a better critique of her portfolio work than family and friends.
