A Digital Photography Technique?

I am trying to capture pix where the background and the surface upon which the subject is are pure white or pure black, such as in portraiture where you see the subject only, but behind him is either bright white or black space..
I think there's a special material or object to use, but what is it?

No special material... any black or white fabric or paper will do... velvet is the best, but can be pretty expensive! Just make sure it doesn't have a shiny surface... those are more difficult to deal with.

Also make sure your subject is a few feet from the background so you don't cast a shadow... unless you want one.
