HELP!...Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom question!?

I am getting into photography and would like to know more about Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom.

Firstly there are so many versions of Photoshop i am unsure which is right for me. I will be taking photos using my digital SLR camera and will need to edit the images, ie colour to back and white, touch ups, colour effects etc etc. I dont need it for anything involving video. Also what effects etc can i do with my photographs using these applications.

Alternativly is there any free software like this that can be used that is as good or is Adobe the best?

Any help would be very much appreciated!! Thanks :)

Basically Photoshop has 2 levels, Elements and the "full version". Professionals have some use of the advanced features of the full version, but they pay a price for it. Things like actions, batch processing, etc that allow them to spend less time on each shot for when they are dealing in bulk. There are also a number of advanced editing features and modes as well. Elements, while not free is less than a hundred bucks, contains the primary editing features that most people use. It also supports various plug-ins to give you a wide range of effects and editing features. Most all people can get by with Elements. I even know a pro or 2 who only use Elements.

What is the best FREE photo editing software and how to get it
