What Basic Equipment Do I Need to Start Photography?

I'm looking to start photography, especially portrait photography but I was wondering if someone could help me get started by telling me what equipment I need for a basic setup.

Currently I'm using a Canon EOS 450D with a 430EX speedlite and that's it. I want to get some more lights, diffusers, reflectors etc. but I'm new to this and don't know which ones to buy.

Any response will be greatly appreciated :)

Lots of info here;

Basically you want your light off camera - your best bet is to learn to use it manually (manual power settings, not TTL) and trigger it with radio triggers (RF602's very popular & reliable).

Get a couple of stands and a softbox (Ezyfold box off eBay's a good start) or umbrella (need an umbrella hotshoe adapter on top of your light stand).

A 5-in-1 reflector is handy as you can have it for fill (white, gold, silver), as a flag for light spill (black) or with all covers removed as a diffusion panel or scrim.

Add additional speedlights as funds become available - don't need Canon brand. Something like a YN560 is a good deal - cheap but full manual, zoom head, good guide number.
