Which canon lens should I buy?

Hi,

Since my baby girl has been born I've been getting into photography, I setup a small studio, white background and couple of strobe heads and a Canon 450D with the standard 18-55m ef-s is, it's a basic setup, but I'm enjoying myself.

I've noticed the pictures arn't very sharp and I'd like to get the skin tones a bit nicer. I was wondering if this is related to the lights, the lense or both?

I was thinking about upgrading the lense to an ef 24-105mm L series lense, would I get the benefits from this lense for my setup?

Any tips appreciated,

Cheers,

Rich

Canon lenses are pretty consistent across the board with respect to how they render colors/tone. That said, better lenses offer improvements in sharpness, contrast and control of chromatic aberations. I strongly suspect your issues with skin tones are going to boil down to lighting and/or your post processing. Don't take this as an indictment against the 24-105L.

On the contrary, the 24-105L is a very good lens and an excellent option for portraits with a 1.6x crop-body like your 450D. In fact, it appears the first official portrait of the current President of the United States, was shot with the 24-105L mounted on a Canon 5D Mark II. So, you certainly could do worse among lenses. When I was shooting 1.6x crop cameras exclusively, the lens I chose as an upgrade from the 18-55mm kit lens was the EF-s 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM which is every bit as sharp as the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L and 24-105mm f/4L USM without giving up your current lens' wide angle coverage. In fact, the 17-55mm f/2.8 became the lens that stayed on my 40D for three years.
