Should I use soft-boxes or umbrellas for light modification?

Here are few points that may help you to guide me:
# I have working knowledge of basic photography lighting.
# I am mostly interested in portrait shots (not for professional but creative desire)
# I am either looking for continuous light or using my flash gun with the set up
# Not looking for strobes as they are expensive
# looking for economic options.

I use my Nikon SB800 strobes (I have three) in softboxes. I use L brackets, nuts, and bolts to make a cold-shoe that positions the flash correctly.

I only use umbrellas when I am in a hurry, like at a wedding.

If you are working in rooms with light walls (doesn't matter what color), bounce flash, using a flash on a tripod, is excellent lighting. Just use an expo disc or gray card to color balance for the color of the wall, even if the wall seems to be white.
